Virgo
Part I: Introduction
Recently, I have been reading The Soul’s Religion, by Thomas Moore. A quote from the book is particularly appropriate for Virgos.
“During my monastic years, retreat masters frequently admonished me to live a perfect life, and what they meant was a life without fault. But, etymologically, the word perfect means to do something all the way through. A perfect person would be without blemish, but the perfected person is someone who has really lived.(Underline mine)
Traditionally, Virgo was ruled by Mercury. Today it is, more appropriately ruled by Chiron, and its meaning has greatly expanded. In modern language, we can say that Chiron's rulership represents an upgraded Virgo’s functionality. We are learning new ways to handle life, better ways to work, and healthier ways to live. Issues of health and work have always been part of life, but, until the discovery of Chiron, they went largely unnoticed, unquestioned, unanalyzed. Chiron adds that factor, bringing in the idea of efficient handling of them. Human consciousness has now reached an evolutionary level where we have the power to make intentional adjustments (for greater efficiency and economy) in our approach to health, work and life-in-general.
Part II
In terms of spiritual growth, Virgo is the bridge between childhood and young adult. In Virgo physical growth comes to and end and a basic education is completed. We are perfect (see finished), whole and complete. Like adolescents, we stand ready to begin a new phase of life. Virgo is the bridge between childhood and adulthood, the transition between the spiritual child and the spiritual adult. And here lies its difficulty.
As children, we were given rules to live by and methods for making life work by the adults who parented and educated us. In evolutionary terms, we enter life with a complete spiritual structure, and a basic spiritual education. The problem with both is that it is related to the past. Our teachers could only teach us what they had learned from their parents, but time is not static. Life ever changes, grows, becomes and new times call for new rules and methods. It is often no more appropriate to stay within its bounds, or use its methods, than it is for a teen to be fed from a baby bottle.
And so, many Virgos have struggled to perfect their practice of the past, and doing so they were destined to fail. Often the struggle was so conditioned that unworkable or inefficient methods were repeated and repeated, with increasing levels of guilt and fatigue. Like traditional teen-agers, they must rebel against the past and strike out to build or grow the future. Life has always called them to get out of the ruts, or out of the box, and find their own morality, their own proficiency, their own path.
Historically, the general consciousness has denied and suppressed its right-brain functions. A few people channeled them into art, but, until quite recently, art was the only socially acceptable use for the intuitive function. The great gift that Chiron has given many Virgos is to re-connect them with their intuitive side. Its great symbols are the internet and the modems that connect us to it.
Part III: Virgo’s Model for Today
The development of intuition has dramatically increased since the 1970s. This is especially noticeable in Virgos, because they had been so heavily grounded in the old reality before then. While there were a few intuitive Virgos prior to that time, they were relatively rare and often hid it.
In the past thirty or so years, the Virgo theme has dominated humanity, for the general consciousness is being upgraded. Specifically, this upgrade is shown, all across the world, by new generations being born with right-brain dominance. They are coming in with a wide range of psychic-intuitive abilities. Indigos are the warriors and systems busters. They were and are the rebellious teens. For some of them, passage through their teens was traumatic–for both the children and their parents–but then, at the beginning of their twenties, all that energy is converted to positive use as they model dramatic successes, that, in generations past, were rare before age thirty.
In the nineties, the Crystals followed, many of them the offspring of Indigos. These children are what they are. They do not–perhaps cannot–suppress the right-brain dominance, nor can they be coerced. They do not fight back as Indigos did, they simply ignore attempts to change them. It would seem that they simply do not recognize attempts to force them into more traditional molds. Consequently, many are being mis-diagnosed as flawed.
Actually, most are telepathic and consequently may not speak aloud as early as expected. When bombarded with too many expectations, they may turn inward. Not recognizing human evolution when they see it, many members of the medical community are labeling vast numbers of the new kids as ADD, ADHD, Autistic or with Asperger’s Syndrome. While there may be some validity to the diagnoses, the problem with it is that these are not problems or flaws–but simply transitional phases between the Piscean Age norm and the Aquarian Age norm.
Our recent research suggests that the best approach is to realize that these are super-sensitive. Not only are they sensitive to sights, sounds, and other vibes, they are physically sensitive. Many react badly to artificial flavors or colors, sugar, and various allergens–especially dairy, wheat and its relatives. Crystals want to be good, but their sensitivity to certain substances can influence their attitudes and behavior in unpleasant ways. Let adult caretakers of these children research this. The internet provides good resources.
Our point is that we find that may of today’s Crystal children have charts with emphasized Virgo/Chiron factors. Notice that Virgo’s keywords include purity, or clarity and these are crystalline words. Their physical sensitivity also brings up issues of health and functionality. Virgo has always suggested Servant of the Most High. These little ones are like angels living on Earth, coping with human idiosyncrasies. Let us not clip their wings!
Part IV: From Principles of Astrology
Because Pisces, the Virgo polarity point, has long been called unconscious, Virgo can be called the sign of consciousness. It should be noted, however, there is really no such thing as unconsciousness, except when we are in coma or dead. It is more accurate to call Virgo visible consciousness, because we can see the thinking process and Pisces invisible consciousness, because we cannot. Earthy, practical Virgo consciousness, is clearly focused in the here and now. It represents the consensus reality, what is visible, solid, and real enough to take into your two hands for examination, application, and use.
Mundanely, Virgo is about function, how functional we are in terms of health and competence. Its basic task is to function consciously, intentionally, and independently. At higher levels, It is equipped to discover the nature and function of consciousness, individually and generally. At its highest current levels, it is the gateway to enlightenment and the creative use of human consciousness. While basic levels of function are elemental to incarnation, higher levels are attained only by choice.
Wherever Virgo is found in a chart, there are choices to be made. We are required to analyze the situation and make our selection based on personal values and intentions. What is useful to us? What works best? What will best serve our purposes?
Perfection is a constant Virgo theme, often misunderstood. Virgo is born perfect. It does not need to be made perfect. At Virgo, we are whole, perfect, and complete, having attained full physical size and a basic education. Adolescent spirits, we require only practice.
The Virgo level of human development is a point of high potential. Virgo is meant to teach us to function efficiently within the constraints of physical reality and the general consciousness with which it is surrounded at our particular point in time and space. Its psychological correspondent is adolescence, a phase caught between childhood and adulthood, when we are simultaneously learning to adjust to an adult body and preparing to find our place in adult society.
Notice the square relationship between Gemini and Virgo. When emphasized, it reminds us that without the correct Mercury data, no amount of file reorganization by Chiron can make life work efficiently. If Virgo areas are not working, check your data base for faulty information. If you are doing everything right and getting the wrong results, check your right data.
Virgo chart areas are places of high potential, but they are also places requiring effort and/or attention. Their only lack is lack of experience. The Virgo phase of spiritual development is designed to give them that. From this comes the idea of learning by experience, of apprenticeship, of service.
Virgo does serve, according the purpose for which it was designed. It is not about being a slave, or sacrificing the self on a cross of dogma, religious or otherwise. It is about analyzing the self, to see what it is designed to do. It is also about doing the logical thing, and about finding your right service or occupation. Analyze Virgo planets and points to see where they are most useful and let them do what they are intended to do. Never try to twist them into a new shape, never try to make them conform to the opinions of others.
